The Section of Rheumatology at University of Chicago Medicine is a dynamic and growing enterprise of faculty, staff, and fellows who are committed to providing outstanding state-of-the-art patient care, understanding the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, and training the next generation of physicians and scientists. Through our disease-focused clinics we offer an inter-disciplinarily approach to patient care that provides access to the most current therapies and to the resources of the University. In parallel with our clinical activities, we have well-developed basic science research programs where our primary focus is on understanding the development and regulation of lymphocytes which is fundamental to the pathogenesis of most autoimmune diseases. These are exciting times in Rheumatology. Remarkable advances in our knowledge of basic immunology are beginning to translate into new and better treatments for those suffering from autoimmune and metabolic diseases. The Section is well poised to both take advantage and contribute to these revolutions in the understanding and treatment of rheumatic diseases.

Job Summary

The Weinmann lab is looking to hire a Senior Research Professional to work on research projects related to the regulation of mammalian genomes. Areas of emphasis include the role for metabolites in immune cell differentiation and defining how evolutionary structural variation impacts gene regulation in immunity. The position encourages creative research questions, innovative informatics analyses and implementing novel approaches to better translate mechanisms between model organisms and human health. The projects require expertise in handling genome-wide datasets and training people with different skill levels on approaches to process datasets. Related to this, strong communication and teaching skills are needed to amplify research directions and impacts. The ideal candidate will develop independent directions and thematic programs, supervise/train people at numerous career stages, write manuscripts and/or grants, and contribute to developing new innovations in research and training.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate and promote research projects related to genome regulation in immune cells and assist the Principal Investigator in those projects.

• Develop content and train personnel on best practices in the design of datamining strategies for genomics analyses as well as mentor projects within this scope.

• Serve as a lead in scientific writing for manuscripts and grant proposals.

• Supervise and manage projects, with a leading role in the intellectual development of research topics.

• Manage collaborations both within and outside the university.

• Uses specialized depth and breadth of expertise to lead and conduct research experiments.

• Leads others to solve complex problems, providing expertise to the team which includes of scientists and clinicians from the University and nationally.

• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

• Previous Project Manager role experience.

• Strong record of scholarly publications.

• Experience with the design and analyses of genomics experiments.

Preferred Competencies

• Strong written and oral communication skills, and ability to engage people from a wide range of scientific and non-scientific backgrounds.

• Ability to create easy to follow protocols for processing publicly available genomics datasets.

• Ability to design and make dynamic visualizations for datasets.

• Expertise in immunology and genome regulation.

• Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
