About the role

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English, Creative Writing, beginning September 1, 2025, for an on-campus academic year (9 month) appointment. 

The successful candidate will teach Introduction to Creative Writing (for general education students as well as English majors) and upper-level workshop courses in Fiction, Poetry, and Screenwriting.  Teaching responsibilities will also include first year writing and may include upper-level courses in other areas of interest as appropriate. Expertise in film desired but not required. Responsibilities will encompass course instruction and development, advising, engaging in campus and professional service, and fostering opportunities for undergraduate creative production and experiential learning. We seek a dedicated professional with a passion for teaching and a commitment to career growth.  The successful candidate will join an engaged group of English faculty in a collegial and supportive small university. 

Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the minimum salary for Assistant Professor is $62,222, commensurate with education and experience. Key Responsibilities include (not limited to):

  • Deliver a minimum of four courses (12 contact hours), or equivalent, per semester at both introductory and advanced levels.
  • Employ a blend of traditional and innovative modalities (competency-based, online, hyflex, and/or in-person).
  •  Actively contribute to the academic community through campus and professional service endeavors.
  •  Assist in curriculum development and recruitment to the undergraduate English program.
  • Serve as the faculty editor of the English Program’s student literary journal, supervise capstone projects, and foster additional opportunities for student readings and publications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to collaborate within the academic community and engage with external stakeholders; proficiency in utilizing innovative teaching methods and technology to enhance student learning experiences, including online and competency-based instruction; demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with faculty in English and across disciplines to maximize student learning opportunities in the classroom and community; willingness to travel occasionally. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • MFA in Creative Writing or Ph.D.  in Creative Writing/English.
  • Experience teaching creative writing and/or composition.
  • Evidence of ongoing creative work and publication.

Preferred:

  • Ph.D. and active record of creative publications.
  • Established record of undergraduate teaching, including composition and creative writing workshops for students at all levels, from beginning to advanced.
