About the role

Under the supervision of a social worker who meets state required standards, the social worker in this position will fulfill the role of an Independent Living Donor Advocate (ILDA). The ILDA ensures potential living kidney and liver donors have an advocate to speak to who is not associated with the potential recipient team and is independent of the decision to transplant the potential recipient. The ILDA advocates for the rights of the living donor through all phases of care including pre-donation, donation, and post-donation. The ILDA assesses and documents the living donor’s understanding of the informed consent process, evaluation process, surgical procedure, and follow up requirements. The ILDA also educates on the process for filing and addressing any grievances, as well as assists donors with this process. The ILDA works independently of the Transplant Center and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary teams. The ILDA complies with required standards for medical/legal responsibilities, CMS, and UNOS, as well as serves as a resource to other allied and administrative staff within the Section of Social Work.

 

Social worker with current licensure at the clinical level and eligible to practice independently. An MSW degree is also required from an accredited Social Work program.Candidates must have an advanced knowledge of mental illness, personality development, knowledge of the types of treatment, and skills in conducting individual, group, and family therapy. Must have knowledge of adjustment to medical diagnosis’ and chronic disease. Strong communication skills are needed to interact with patients, patient’s family members, multi-disciplinary team, community agencies, and other resources. Must also have psychosocial diagnostic skills and the ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and in written form.

Preferred: Knowledgeable about living organ donation, transplantation, medical ethics, informed consent, and the potential impact of family or other external pressure on the living donor’s decision about whether to donate.

Licensure: Current licensure at the clinical level and eligible to practice independently, as required by applicable state requirements (LICSW with the MN Board of Social Work)
