The Department of Corrections Executive Director of Health, Wellness, and Engagement is responsible for designing the Department’s health and wellness strategy, overseeing the units and teams charged with executing the Department’s health and wellness strategy, and coordinating this work and the Department’s engagement with individuals in the custody of the Commissioner of Corrections.
This is an executive-level position who will serve as one of the six members of the Department’s executive leadership team. The incumbent will report to the Deputy Commissioner of Corrections. When the division is fully established, the incumbent will oversee five units, each responsible for a specific substantive health issue: the Health Services Unit, the Mental Health Unit, the Wellness and Nutrition Unit, the Continuity of Care Unit, and the Population Engagement Unit. The incumbent will oversee, monitor, and manage a ~$35 million health services contract; a holistic wellness program comprised of fitness, nutrition, recreation, and wellness services; and oversee communication and engagement activities with the incarcerated population, to include facilitating the Department’s Family Advisory Council, establishing an Incarcerated Individual Advisory Council, and representing the Department at various boards. The incumbent will also be expected to represent the Department with the Administration, at the Vermont General Assembly, with members of the press and media, and at public forums on topics related to the health and wellness of the State’s incarcerated population. The incumbent will also serve as the executive champion in executing one of the four strategic priorities of the Department: Health and Wellness.
Upon hiring, the incumbent will be charged with designing and then expanding the Department’s current Health Services Division into an executive-level division to manage all facets of health and wellness for the incarcerated population. This work will occur under the direction of the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Corrections.
Well-qualified candidates will demonstrate multiple years of work experience with progressively increasing complexity, responsibility, and impact. Applicants should detail in their applications examples highlighting multiple years of leadership experience, ideally at an executive or senior level. An in-depth understanding of health systems, the administration of health care, and corrections is preferred, though candidates who demonstrate substantial relevant experience leading complex enterprises will be considered.
Well qualified candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study and at least five years of relevant experience, or a master’s degree or higher in a relevant field of study and at least three years of relevant experience.
