General Information:

The SMAD 101 teaching assistant offers guidance and encouragement to students taking SMAD 101 and students preparing for the School of Media Arts and Design Admissions process. The TA will assist the SMAD 101 professor during class meetings and hold regular office hours to help students with course material. The successful TA candidate also will sharpen their media creation skills by working on components for the class, as well as for SMAD’s promotion and outreach. The successful teaching assistant will be selected based on a formal interview, academic record, attitude, and media production interest/experience.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide SMAD 101 students with information about study strategies, academic expectations, and the process of applying for admission into the School of Media Arts and Design.
• Attend Monday, Wednesday, and Friday SMAD 101 class meetings to keep current with content and assist the professor with interacting with the class and proctoring exams.
• Review SMAD 101 material to accurately answer student questions and help students grasp important concepts, events, and people highlighted in the course. The TA also will meet with students who wish to review their past exam performance.
• Employ active listening skills to clearly understand student concerns and questions.
• Assist in creating course content, including closed captioning of video lessons and selection of video content for class presentations.
• Answer emails from the SMAD 101 professor and students in a timely manner.
• Contribute to outreach efforts and events aimed at SMAD students and prospective students and their families, including JMU open house and “Choices” events.
• Maintain privacy of student information and grades and
• Meet with prospective students and families and lead them on tours of SMAD facilities.
• Work with other SMAD student workers and SMAD faculty to produce multimedia components for SMAD.
• Keep the appointment calendar up to date.

 

Qualifications:

• Required: Fully admitted into SMAD and enrolled at JMU for at least one year, including Spring 2025, at the time of application.
• Required: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
• Preferred: Enrolled in or completed SMAD 201 and SMAD 202 at the time of application.
• Availability to work 10 hours per week between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and to attend SMAD 101 class meetings during the academic year (10:20-11:10 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during the Fall 2025 semester).

Conditions of Employment:  

Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).

Students must have a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA.
