Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.
Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) is a 613-bed, licensed mental health treatment facility that provides person-centered services to adults suffering from severe and persistent mental illness. The hospital, located in Macclenny, was established in 1959 and is the largest state operated civil treatment facility.

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as Senior Physician (Primary Care Supervisor) at the Northeast Florida State Hospital. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:
- This is a professional position in a large state mental health facility. The incumbent serves as Sr. Physician Coordinator for Primary Care Services to the Medical Executive Director (MED) for Medical Services and provides delegated managerial assistance and supervision as it relates to Primary Care Services and the Medical Services Department Managers for Infection Control, Laboratory, Radiology, Dietitians and Dental Services. The incumbent is expected to maintain a positive and professional attitude and manner at all times; shall ensure individuals receive comprehensive medical and mental health services in a cost effective, customer-oriented manner; follows medical ethics and standards in an outcome-oriented management system while maintaining sensitivity to the constitutional rights of patients.
- Incumbent supervises and provides overall direction to all Primary Care Physicians (PCP’s).
- Incumbent ensures primary care coverage meets hospital needs; provides case review for problematic cases; reviews and approves Primary Care outside consultations for medical necessity; reviews and evaluates clinical performance; performs medication reviews and makes clinical recommendations when needed.
- Reviews admission referral packets and completes a medical report summary to include current medical status; request(s) for additional clinical information and recommendation for placement.
