Job Duties

Candidates must have a minimum of a Commercial Learners Permit prior to being hired. Preference will be given to candidates who already have a current CDL.

This is a wage position and is limited to 1,500 hours of work in the twelve month period beginning May 1, through April 30. No state benefits are provided. Position will perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and heavy manual labor while conducting roadway maintenance activities. Equipment operations include but are not limited to backhoes, dump trucks, tractors and similar equipment. Positions perform emergency roadway operations and must be willing to work outside normal work hours in emergencies. Additional vacancies may be filled from this applicant pool within 90 days of the closing date in the Farmville Residency (Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland and Prince Edward Counties).

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of roadway maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures. Demonstrated experience operating dump trucks and other light/medium/heavy-duty equipment and performing preventive maintenance. Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and programs. Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools. Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.

Additional Considerations

Possession of a valid CDL and DOT medical card. Experience in roadway maintenance or construction.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.
