Lockheed Martin Space in Palo Alto, CA is seeking a Summer 2026 Intern for the Space Science and Instrumentation Team. In this role, you will contribute to the design, development, analysis, and testing of spacecraft instrumentation equipment for both internal research and development projects as well as program support. The successful candidate will have experience and/or knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts, and a demonstrated ability to conceptualize, develop, and implement solutions. Must be a US Citizen.
Basic Qualifications
- Pursuing a Masters degree or PhD from an accredited university or college majoring in mechanical, aeronautical/aerospace, or equivalent degree
- Experience using software utilized in the design/analysis of hardware (CAD - Computer Aided Design and/or FEM - Finite Element Analysis, Thermal Desktop, or similar)
- Research experience in astronomy or astrophysics
- Proficient in Matlab and Python
- Instrumentation development and/or research experience
- Must be a US Citizen
Desired skills
- Prior NASA project experience
- Experience working with James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and/or Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data
- Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) concept experience
- Application of mechanical and/or structural design in real-world/in-class applications.
- Basic knowledge of hardware applications in
space environments.
- Ability to work in a collaborative and team-based environment
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Fluids and/or thermal design experience

Work Schedule Information
Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed.
