Overview: 

The Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for Technical Trainer positions within the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD). 

 

ORNL is the largest U.S. Department of Energy Science and Energy Laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.  ORNL operates five non-reactor nuclear facilities and dozens of radiological facilities that perform nuclear research and isotope production activities to support advancing nuclear power applications, renewable energy, basic scientific research, and isotope production for medical and industrial applications.  ORNL also operates the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). This one-of-a-kind research facility provides the world's most intense pulsed neutron beams for scientific research and industrial development. The NRPD is responsible for partnering with operations and research staff to support the science mission while protecting staff from nuclear and radiological hazards and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.  The NRPD provides radiological worker training to staff and radiological control technicians to support the Lab’s science mission.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Create, schedule, and close out classes in the learning management system

  • Develop and maintain PowerPoint presentations for radiological workers and radiological control technician training.

  • Develop, maintain, and track qualification cards for NRPD. 

  • Lead the development of classroom training and dynamic learning activities. 

  • Develop tests and challenge exams, performance demonstration evaluations, and other grading criteria.

  • Review training reports

  • Distribute radiological worker cards and TLDs

  • Provide or assist with classroom training and dynamic learning activities delivery

  • Responsible for maintaining training supplies and ensuring equipment is operational

  • Develop or revise training-related procedures and Job Performance Measures

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a Radiological Worker Training requalification program

  • Responsible for the development of specialized radiological worker training as required

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in Health Physics, Organizational Management, or related technical field with at least five to seven years of relevant experience. Additional years of related experience may be considered to satisfy educational requirements.

  • Experience implementing radiological training in accordance with 10 CFR 835 within the DOE Complex.

  • Demonstrated field experience as a Radiological Technician and/or Radiological Protection Operations Manager.

  • Experience developing and delivering training to diverse groups. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science or Engineering degree in Health Physics, Organizational Management, or related technical field with four to six years of relative experience.

  • Excellent computer skills, including experience developing training materials.

  • Experience within the DOE Complex and practical experience implementing a Radiation Protection Program in accordance with 10 CFR 835.

  • Demonstrated technical abilities and excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Must have good interpersonal skills and work effectively as part of a team.

  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after the offer.

  • HSPD-12 PIV badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
