Occupational Summary

The Program Leader is responsible for developing and managing the overall activities of the Duke Center for Virology largely by working with the Center leadership in the establishment, coordination, evaluation, and scientific management of research programs. The Program Leader serves as a resource for Center investigators with coordination of pre-award activities related to the submission of grants, contracts and other funding opportunities.  The Program Leader also has responsibilities for additional, non-research related center activities such as coordinating the educational missions of the center. Experience in conducting and/or managing basic/translational microbiology or virology research is required.  Additional training in project management or related training desired.

 

Work Performed

The Program Leader is tasked with developing and managing programs focused on basic/translational science and education for virus related topics at Duke University. Specific duties are defined below:

• Help develop and coordinate submission of scientific research proposals as well as financial and administrative strategies essential to the successful management of virology related research projects conducted by principal investigator(s) of the center.
• Participate and assist Center leadership and Principal Investigators with the development and final negotiation of research program activities/scope and statements of work.
• Collaborate with Center leadership to track and project Center spending along with other productivity metrics.  There is also responsibility for periodic communication of these findings/metrics for department and school oversight.
• Proactively identify changes in research and educational scope and ensure appropriate planning measures are taken with internal and external stakeholders such that the Center stays positioned at the forefront of virology research/education.
• Plan, lead, and facilitate both regular cross-functional project team meetings and external meetings with sponsors and collaborators.
• Coordinate and help develop virology related educational resources for the virology specific training activities of the center.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

1. Completion of a Ph.D. or M.D. in basic science, public health, clinical research or other related scientific field with one additional years of program management and/or research experience required. OR
