­­Overview:  

We are seeking a Geospatial Software Engineer who will focus on geospatial data analysis and visualization, particularly to support the quality assurance of data being ingested into the software systems being developed by the team.  This position resides in the Earth Science Database Engineering and Informatics group in the Environmental Sciences Division and Biological and Environmental System Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our team, you will support the HydroSource and Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program. These projects are long-term resource information projects that archive and disseminate key environmental data to stakeholders across the United States and throughout the world.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Full stack software development to enable the discovery, analysis, visualization, and downloading of geospatial data.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in a science or engineering discipline, with disciplines related to hydrology or ecology particularly preferred. 
  • At least one year practical experience as a full-stack software developer working with Earth science-relevant applications, including experience displaying and manipulating geospatial data.   
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team software development environment, contributing to shared goals. 
  • Practical experience in two or more of the following languages: TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, bash, or SQL.  Python and TypeScript experience are strongly preferred. 
  • Practical experience working with open-source front-end mapping libraries such as OpenLayers, Leaflet, or MapLibre GL JS. OpenLayers experience strongly preferred. 
  • Practical experience working with React JS frameworks. NextJS experience strongly preferred. 
  • Practical experience developing geospatial maps and visualizations. 
  • Practical experience with software development using git. 
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing documentation, developing and analyzing use cases, and presenting results to colleagues. 
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new material and technology rapidly and put that learning into effective practice. 

 

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Formal degrees or training programs working with geospatial data and geospatial information systems. 
  • Experience working with hydrology or ecology-relevant applications and data is particularly preferred.
  • Storing and retrieving geospatial data using open-source geospatial servers and relational databases, with PostGIS and GeoServer experience particularly relevant. 
  • Experience developing geospatial web applic
