Under supervision, the Highway Maintenance Worker performs a variety of routine repair and maintenance work related to highway projects on roadways, roadside appurtenances, storm drainage systems, and landscapes; or airfield repair and maintenance projects on runways, taxiways, aprons, roadways, parking lots, storm drainage systems, fences, gates, and adjacent airport properties.

Examples of duties

Knowledge of

• Methods, materials, and equipment used in vegetation and debris removal and in repair and maintenance of pavement, roadside and/or airfield appurtenances, and landscape areas up to and including equipment used for mechanical base repair, spot paving, grinding, trench paving, etc.
• Proper methods of temporary traffic control to ensure traffic flow and to protect work crews
• Safety precautions and safety orders pertaining to the work performed
• Various computer software applications used in the transportation maintenance field
• Various office equipment such as computers, copiers, faxes, etc.

Ability to

• Operate road, airfield, and landscape maintenance tools and equipment, including ensuring the equipment is operating properly
• Perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment
• Perform a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks relating to the repair and maintenance of roadways and airfields
• Operates hand and power tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner
• Learn to use various computers and software applications relative to the work assigned
• Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance
• Understand and apply Federal and State laws and regulations
• Develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with others

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

Either: 1. Successful completion of 30 semester (45 quarter) units from an accredited college, career school, or Federal/State approved apprenticeship program in a construction trade or a closely related field.

Or: 2. One year of full-time, paid experience that can be directly related to the knowledge and abilities listed above for the class, or performing general labor work in support of highway, airfield, agricultural and/or landscaping repair or maintenance, or other construction trade projects.

NOTE: Completion of training courses which do not have semester unit values are equated to semester units on the basis of: 15 clock hours of instruction equal one (1) semester (1.5 quarter) unit.

Note: If the word "experience" is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

General Qualifications

Background and Criminal History Check:  The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602, Personnel Policies and Procedure, and applicable federal and state laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidate's ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist.
