Summary

The Housing Stability area of Human Services Public Health is seeking an Accounting Specialist to join the Homelessness Prevention Payments Team. This position is part of a team that processes financial assistance requests that help prevent evictions and support housing stability. The Accounting Specialist will ensure that payment information is submitted accurately and on time to property owners.

Location and hours:
This position is remote. Remote workers may be required to come on-site 0 to 12 days a year for work meetings, trainings, or for any other reasons that their supervisor may deem necessary (may include additional days for onboarding and new employee training). Supervisors will provide as much advance notice as practicable. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Based on the business needs of this position, hires must live in or relocate to Minnesota. New Employe Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In this position, you will:
  • Review, enter, and/or approve payment requests in payment systems for rent assistance for residents, support batch pulls, and respond to requestors to ensure timely and accurate payment processing. 
  • Maintain and update unreconciled checks reports, follow through on outstanding items, and upload check information into payments database.
  • Add and verify new vendors in payments systems, collaborate with internal partners, update payment records when funds are returned to the county, and support vendor financial and tax processes. 
  • Prepare payment-related reports, update and present payment information at relevant meetings, and respond to staff and partner questions regarding payments and financial workflows. 
  • Contact property owners regarding payments that need to be reissued or canceled. 

Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Three years or more of experience in maintaining financial records.
    • Three years or more of post-secondary education in areas related to business or accounting.

Nice to have:
  • Experience:
    • Working within a human services organization or program.
    • Using computer programs and/or databases such as PeopleSoft to perform data entry where accuracy is essential.
    • Using Microsoft Excel and/or similar database and spreadsheet applications to create pivot tables and develop charts to sort and organize data.
    • Working with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Teams, and Word).
  • Ability to:
    • Perform mathematical calculations accurately. 
    • Take initiative in solving problems and using sound judgement when problems arise.
    • Read, understand, and follow complex instructions.
    • Be detail oriented.
    • Communicate effectively with colleagues and work in a team environment.
