Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for an organized individual to serve as Painter at Joliet Treatment Center. The chosen candidate will plan, organize, and maintain a paint shop. Further duties include the maintenance of inventory, patching, preparation, and painting of various areas throughout the facility. We encourage all qualified individuals to apply.
 

Essential Functions

  • Applies paint, shellac, varnish, enamel, stain or other protectives to prepare surfaces, using brush, spray, cloth or other means.
  • Instructs and supervises unskilled individual in custody workers and escort vendors throughout the facility where work is needed.
  • Prepares interior or exterior walls, metal surfaces, floors, ceiling and equipment for painting.
  • Erects ladders, scaffolding from heights, and uses platforms.
  • Applies sizing materials.
  • Mixes and matches paints.
  • Prepares and applies patching plaster as needed.
  • Removes soiled or excess paint.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires successful completion of a recognized painter apprenticeship program and two (2) years of full-time journey level painter experience or six (6) years of full-time journey level painter experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience applying paint, shellac, varnish, enamel, stain or other protectives to prepare surfaces, using brush, spray, cloth or other means.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience glazing windows.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience preparing interior or exterior walls, metal surfaces, floors, ceiling and equipment for painting.
