The Field Museum invites applications for an Assistant Curator of Invertebrate Zoology (excluding terrestrial arthropods). We seek PhD-level candidates with a record of excellence in collections-based research on invertebrates, with expertise in systematics, evolutionary biology, comparative morphology, biogeography, molecular phylogenetics, or related fields. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a robust, externally funded research program in invertebrate zoology that utilizes and contributes to the building, management, and oversight of the Museum's invertebrate collections, and incorporates education, outreach, professional service, and participation in the Museum’s public programs.

Field Museum’s 5-million-specimen Invertebrate collection encompasses all living invertebrates except insects, arachnids, and myriapods. Mollusca represents the largest portion (95%), making it one of the largest malacological collections in the U.S. Terrestrial gastropods are particularly well represented. Among the other taxa, crustaceans, echinoderms, and cnidarians comprise larger holdings. The Museum has core molecular/genetic lab work facilities, SEM and light microscopy, micro-CT, and high-performance computing. Close relationships with area universities provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate training and the use of additional specialized laboratories. In particular, the successful candidate will be eligible to apply for academic affiliation with the University of Chicago, and if successful, can become a primary advisor of graduate students in the Committee on Evolutionary Biology PhD program, and/or a lecturer in the Biological Sciences Collegiate Division.

At the Field Museum, a curator's duties and responsibilities fall into four broad categories: Research, Curation, Education, and Service. Research is considered the principal and foremost responsibility; performance in the three other categories is also mandatory for promotion, reappointment, and renewal.

This is a full-time (10-month) term-renewable position in the Life Sciences Section of the Negaunee Integrative Research Center. A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline must be held by the start of employment. Review for reappointment occurs before the end of year 3, followed by review for promotion to Associate before the end of year 6. After successful promotion to the Associate level, the position is renewable every 7 years.
