Senior Accountant

Reports To: Revenue Accounting Manager

General Description

Potbelly is seeking a Senior Accountant to support revenue accounting and payroll operations, with primary responsibility for point-of-sale (POS) transaction accounting. This role ensures the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of revenue and payroll-related financial data.

The Senior Accountant will maintain disciplined reconciliation practices, prepare journal entries, and partner cross-functionally to ensure accurate financial reporting. This role also supports payroll accounting through preparation of journal entries and reconciliations.

Key Responsibilities

• Reconcile daily and monthly POS transaction activity to the general ledger.
• Prepare journal entries related to sales transactions, gift cards, loyalty redemptions, and related clearing accounts.
• Investigate and resolve discrepancies between POS systems and financial reporting outputs.
• Partner with IT and Operations to address data discrepancies and support system accuracy.
• Prepare payroll-related journal entries and reconcile payroll balance sheet accounts.
• Maintain accurate supporting schedules and documentation for assigned accounts.
• Support audit requests related to POS revenue and payroll accounting.
• Ensure timely close and reconciliation processes
• Strengthen documentation standards and internal control compliance within assigned areas.
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and enhance accuracy within assigned processes.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
• 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience
• Experience preparing journal entries and account reconciliations
• Strong Excel skills
• High attention to detail and analytical mindset
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred

• Restaurant or multi-unit retail experience
• Experience with Toast
• Experience with ADP
• Experience with NetSuite or Workday
• CPA or CPA eligibility
