Description
The Mathematics Department at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville seeks to fill ONE postdoctoral position.
The position is a nine-month academic year appointment, renewable for up to three years, beginning August 1, 2025. Evidence of potential for excellence in research and good quality teaching is required. Review of applications will begin January 20, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled. This is an open (not area-specific) search in which candidates will be ranked according to the quality of research and potential interactions with departmental faculty. Individual faculty members and groups of faculty members may “champion/sponsor” individual applicants, the candidates are encouraged to contact their potential faculty mentors as early as possible.

Knoxville is a progressive, medium-sized city nestled in the Tennessee Valley, which is bordered on one side by the Great Smoky Mountains and on the other by the geologically rich Cumberland Plateau. The downtown area, including the Old City new development on the south side of the Tennessee River, is a thriving mixture of shops, restaurants, breweries, and residential and business buildings. The city’s Urban Wilderness is larger than Central Park in New York City and supports an abundance of activities from water sports to hiking, running and mountain biking on over 50 miles of trails and greenways. The city has a relatively low cost of living, and there is no state income tax on earned income.
Qualifications
A PhD or equivalent degree in mathematical sciences earned between January 1, 2022, and August 31, 2025, is required.

Required application materials include a cover letter specific to the postdoctoral position, including the name(s) of at least one mathematics professor at the University of Tennessee with whom the applicant would like to have research interaction, a curriculum vitae, a research statement describing the candidate’s research accomplishments and plans, and a teaching statement. Moreover, at least three letters of reference, one of them addresses teaching, must be provided by the letter writer directly via Interfolio.
