About the role

Job Description

Hybrid: This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their primary location (Warren, MI) three times per week, at minimum.

The Role:

The Senior Aerodynamics Engineer is responsible for delivering optimized fuel economy and range by reducing vehicle aerodynamic drag.  Collaborate cross functionally with Design Studio, Program Teams, Engineering and Manufacturing to lead the development and integration of cost-effective solutions to reduce drag while enabling the Studio theme. This position requires a mastery of both creative physics-based problem-solving skills as well as communication and interpersonal skills.  Our senior engineers lead both physical and virtual aerodynamic assessments leveraging our full-scale wind tunnel and computational fluid dynamics software.  Other leadership behaviors of advanced planning and organization, attention to detail and personal accountability are also required in this role.

What You’ll do:

  • Define program aerodynamic performance requirements based on energy strategy, benchmarking and program priorities
  • Develop program content and strategy to meet vehicle Aerodynamic and Energy requirements
  • Integrate and balance requirements with front end cooling air flow, brake cooling, thermal and wind noise
  • Regularly organize and conduct virtual aerodynamic simulations using several commercial CFD codes and supporting software in Windows, LINUX/UNIX and HPC environment, including ANSA, STAR-CCM+, EXA-POWERFLOW and other Internal Codes
  • Organize and lead aerodynamic development tests at GM Kelly Aerodynamics Lab and offsite facilities as needed
  • Lead the collaboration with Design Studio, SMT and Program Team, to integrate required aerodynamic features and content throughout the vehicle development
  • Mentoring less experienced team members on all aspects of effective Aero development and integration (ie. tools, processes, communication, behaviors, etc.)
  • Fully engage in vehicle development activity and proactively take ownership of simulation and test activity to best guide the vehicle design team
  • Clearly communicate aerodynamic results and development plan at regular program meetings, scheduled peer reviews, and program gate reviews
  • Lead final validation and certification of vehicle aerodynamic performance
  • Coordinate Wind Noise and Coast down testing as required
  • Coordinate benchmarking of competitive vehicles
  • Conduct Aeroacoustics and Contamination/Soiling simulations as needed

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • BS Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with fluid dynamics focus or equivalent
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Aerodynamics CFD/CAD tools
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Aerodynamic testing, measurement techniques and data systems
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills
  • High degree of analytical ability to resolve complex issues
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal communication skills to foster relationships with Design, Engineering and Manufacturing team members

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)

  • 5+ years of professional experience with vehicle development/engineering
  • MS Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with fluid dynamics focus or equivalent
  • Experience using CAD software such as UG-NX, Alias or Polyworks
  • DFSS training, Black Belt
  • Engineering experience in Body release engineer, Powertrain cooling, Energy integration 
  • Prior Design and Release or Development experience with Vehicle Engineering functions related to Aerodynamics
