WSP is currently initiating a search for an Early Career Systems Engineer for our Irvine, CA office. The following location will also be considered: San Diego, CA.
WSP USA’s Power & Energy group needs a System Engineer with interest in the modeling, optimization, and analysis of large-scale energy and power systems including wind, solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), combined heat and power, microgrid systems, C&I scale solar PV systems, and thermal energy distribution. The candidate will work under the direct supervision of senior engineers and project managers and will perform a variety of assignments requiring the application of standard engineering and design techniques for large and small-scale energy projects. Core activities may include design and engineering, preparation of equipment specifications, preparation of calculations and modeling, equipment selection and evaluation, load analysis and modeling, and energy rate tariff analysis and optimization. The candidate will work and train under the supervision of senior engineers.
Your Impact
- Provide engineering design support to senior engineers for wind, solar, BESS, CHP, hydrogen, microgrids, district energy, and EV Charge station project layouts, electrical single lines, piping and instrumentation diagrams, control, and communication systems.
- Providing technical engineering assistance for projects related to electrification and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
- Analyze energy load demands for existing and new facilities.
- Develop and run models to simulate electrical loads and heat and mass balance calculations for energy systems.
- Develop financial modeling and analysis tools to evaluate the levelized cost of energy, project NPV, and life cycle costs.
- Work with senior engineers to scope and develop studies, modeling, and data collection approaches.
- Produce written reports that summarize project methodologies, findings, and recommendations.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Energy Systems, or closely related discipline.
- 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience.
- Familiarity with interpreting and reviewing AutoCAD design drawings.
- Familiarity with MatLab, System Advisor Model, HOMER Energy, OpenWind, energyPRO, PVsyst, PVCase, Helioscope, other energy modeling, design, and/or optimization software platforms.
- The selected candidate must have the ability to work in the United States immediately.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Recent graduate or May 2025 graduate in an accredited Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Energy Systems, or related, Undergraduate or Graduate program.
- The successful candidate will have 0-3 years of internship experience in a design and engineering role working with commercial and industrial (C&I) and/or utility-scale power generation and/or renewable energy projects.
- Engineer in Training Certification.
- Master's Degree

Compensation:
Expected Salary (all locations): $56,300 - $92,840
