Position Overview
This position is responsible for directing the preparation of contract plans for in-house designed bridge projects. This position is also responsible for directing the timely review and approval of construction submittals and the investigation and solution of construction problems associated with change of conditions, contractor errors, or plan errors.

Essential Functions
- Manages and directs a staff responsible for the structural analysis, design and plan preparation of bridge and traffic structure plans prepared by in-house staff, and to ensure structural adequacy and completeness of design.
- Assigns, directs, and monitors design projects to ensure completion to meet schedule commitments.
- Ensures that bridges and structures designed by In-House Bridge Design Section staff are compatible with correct structural theory and applicable standards, specifications, and policies.
- Directs the analysis and review of contractor submittals and proposals related to the construction of structures and recommends approval/disapproval.
- Develops, trains, motivates, and evaluates subordinates.
- Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.

Minimum Qualifications
- Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
- Five years of experience in civil engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
- Nine years of experience in civil engineering of which at least five years should be in the specific area of highway engineering, three years of which should have been supervising engineering functions.
- Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.
- Extensive knowledge of modern methods and techniques as applied to the design, construction, and maintenance of public works.
- Ability to direct the work of other engineers, mechanics, equipment operators, and laborers.
