Research Senior Manager

The Research Senior Manager will help develop Upwork’s research agenda, analyze data from survey and interview-based research initiatives, and create compelling research-based content for the Upwork Research Institute. The role will also assist in the editorial planning, content development process, and publication process of research content. It is an exciting role that plays to the strengths of both research and storytelling to help fulfill the mission of the Upwork Research Institute, to change work one insight at a time. The Upwork Research Institute officially launched in November 2023 and this critical role will help us scale and grow the research out in the market. Our current research focus is on the themes of generative AI, organizational culture that is inclusive towards freelancers, and understanding the shifts in distributed work.

Your Responsibilities:

• Working with the Managing Director of the Research Institute, plan and execute against the annual research content calendar.
• Develop new ideas and hypotheses to be tested through research that helps elevate the Upwork brand on our core themes.
• Draft research reports, research blog posts, guides, newsletters, etc. on behalf of The Research Institute.
• Assist in developing research plans, surveys, and materials prior to conducting and fielding research.
• Analyzing data for story-telling purposes.
• Identify and collaborate on research opportunities to support cross-functional projects and campaigns.
• Lead the go-to-market for research launches. This includes managing cross-functional partners to ensure a coordinated launch. 
• Speak at conferences, webinars, or other events to share our Upwork Research with our key audiences.

What it takes to catch our eye:

• 5+ years of research experience (quantitative or qualitative) 
• At least a Master’s degree in organizational behavior, leadership studies or other management discipline (PhD preferred)
• Ability to run correlational, regression, and ANOVA analyses
• SPSS or R  
• Preferred proven track record of developing research and publishing results in applied outlets (i.e., MIT SMR, HBR, Forbes) 
• Research focus that is aligned with the themes of the Research Institute 
• Ability to tell stories with data and clearly communicate actionable insights
• Strong writer with experience in research writing
• Team player - we work to win as a team

The annual base salary for this position in California and Washington ranges from $129,000-$175,000. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salary for this position in California and Washington, and individual base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Additionally, this position is eligible for the annual bonus plan or sales incentive plan and eligibility to participate in our long term equity incentive program.
