Job Description
AECOM is seeking a motivated and technically strong surface Senior Mining Engineer I to join our growing Mining team supporting projects across North America. The successful candidate will contribute to mining projects from early-stage studies through detailed engineering and construction support while working as part of multidisciplinary project teams.
This individual will collaborate with senior mining engineers, project managers, and engineering discipline leads to develop practical and innovative engineering solutions for mining clients. The role requires solid technical knowledge, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to manage multiple assignments while continuing to build technical expertise in mine planning and engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Support clients in evaluating and developing mining solutions, including mine access planning, mining method selection, mine development strategies, and supporting infrastructure.
- Assist with open pit mine design, phase planning, and optimization to support safe and efficient resource extraction.
- Perform waste dump design, haul road design, fleet evaluations, and equipment analysis to support mining operations.
- Develop mine schedules and production plans under the guidance of senior mining engineers.
- Assist with the preparation of capital and operating cost estimates to support engineering studies and project evaluations.
- Coordinate with mining, civil, geotechnical, structural, mechanical, electrical, process, environmental, and water resources engineering teams.
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, and design packages for mining projects.
- Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews and assist in resolving technical challenges throughout project execution.
- Provide engineering support during field investigations, construction activities, commissioning, and operational troubleshooting as required.
- Travel approximately 20% domestically and internationally, including occasional extended assignments.
- Ensure engineering work complies with client requirements, applicable industry standards, and AECOM quality procedures.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- BS in Mining Engineering or a related engineering discipline and 4+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
Preferred Qualifications
- 6 years of progressive mining engineering experience with an emphasis on surface mining.
- Experience using mine planning software such as MineSight (MPSO), Deswik (Spatial-LHS-IS), Datamine (NPVS/Minemax), Vulcan, or similar applications.
- Experience using Whittle or other pit optimization software.
- Experience supporting conceptual studies, prefeasibility studies, feasibility studies, or detailed engineering projects.
- Familiarity with open pit mine planning, production scheduling, haulage analysis, and equipment selection.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary engineering teams while managing multiple project assignments.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progression toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is considered an asset.
