Job Description

The STEM Opportunities in Prison Settings (STEM-OPS) project is seeking a person to fill the part-time position of the STEM-OPS Communications Associate. STEM-OPS is beginning the fourth year of a potential five-year project funded by the National Science Foundation. The vision of STEM-OPS is that all persons impacted by the carceral system are able, and encouraged, to pursue a culturally responsive and equitable high-quality STEM education and career. STEM-OPS is an National Science Foundation (NSF) INCLUDES Alliance that is collaboratively led by Education Development Center, Operation Restoration, Prison to Professionals, the Princeton University Prison Teaching Initiative, and the Initiative for Race Research and Justice at Vanderbilt University. STEM-OPS is engaged in multiple strategies to accomplish its mission, including the development of tools and resources that will be broadly shared, research activities to understand barriers and inform strategy, and publications to create counter-narratives to promote the possibility of STEM success for people who have been directly impacted. 

The STEM-OPS Communications Associate will primarily be responsible for working with the STEM-OPS Communications Committee Lead to create a communications/social media calendar and lead The sySTEM Impacted podcast logistics. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of the carceral system, is directly impacted themselves, and has a passion for STEM. 

You will:

  • manage the process for recording, editing, and post-production of podcast episodes, including developing interview questions and episode outlines
  • cultivate, secure, coordinate and book podcast guests using Zoom, MS Outlook, and virtual calendar services
  • work with Communications Committee lead to ensure finalized podcast content is uploaded to our streaming service
  • contribute to design and implementation of social media posts in collaboration with the STEM-OPS Executive Director and members of the executive team
  • co-manage social media community, including the Glue Up platform, and ensure member engagement

Qualifications

This position requires educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative; creativity and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal & organizational skill. 

Education: 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent

Other skills/experience: 

  • With Bachelor's degree, at least 5 years related experience
  • Deep knowledge of the carceral system
  • Knowledge of social media practices and platforms as well as Search Engine Optimization add-ons such as Yoast
  • Experience with audio editing software such as Adobe, Audition, Audacity, etc.

Preferred skills/experience:

  • Knowledge of Glue Up and Monday.com
