Job Description
GTRI's Advanced Warfighting Technologies Division in the Advanced Concepts Laboratory (ACL) seeks qualified candidates for the position of Co-Op for the Fall 2026 semester. The role of this position is to support various levels of the research and design process based upon their motivation, experience, and capabilities; which include, but are not limited to:
- Mechanical/System design as warranted by the task/mission
- Experimental design and optimization
- The gathering and processing of experimental data
- Record and articulate individual and/or group research results
- Other mission supporting tasks as required
The Advanced Warfighting Technologies Division provides world-class, forward-looking thought leadership and turn-key, best-of-class warfighting technologies focused on countering weapons of mass destruction (CWMD) and changing the future of ground maneuver warfare for the U.S. Government and other sponsors.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Intern
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA
- Full-Time Intern- Must be registered for Full-time Internship Credit
- Part-Time Intern– Must be registered for 6+ credit hours
- Familiarity with SolidWorks CAD software
- Candidate must possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Willingness to work in a fast-paced team environment
- Must be eligible to obtain a DoD Clearance
- Experience with hand tools, drill presses, hand saws, 3D printers, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous or active DoD Secret clearance or higher
- Enthusiastic about learning about new technologies and assessing ways for them to be used in operational environments for the warfighter
- Candidates should have experience working with federal government (either as military, civilian, or contractor).
- Experience in the development of unmanned systems
- Previous engineering design experience including but not limited to electrical hardware, mechanical design and assembly
- Previous job, team, or military experience preferred
- Familiarity with MATLAB for stress analysis
- Familiarity with Python
- Familiarity with Ansys
- Familiarity with machining tools
Secret Clearance
Hours per Week
Full-Time: 40 hours per week
Part-Time: 20 hours per week
U.S. Citizenship Requirements
Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
Clearance Type Required
Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
