Location: Indianapolis, IN. Completed in Sept 2021, POINT's Indianapolis site is one of the largest state-of-the-art radiopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in the world - almost as large as one and a half football fields.

Overview

Reporting to Director, Environmental Health and Radiation Safety, the Radiation Safety Specialist will provide site-level radiation safety support and promote regulatory compliance at a complex radiopharmaceutical manufacturing facility. The Radiation Safety Specialist will be the Subject Matter Expert on the handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials in use at the facility. The Radiation Safety Specialist will perform radiological surveys, radiation detection equipment checks, waste management operations, quantitative assessments, and job hazard analyses on a daily basis – with a focus on taking ownership of the day-to-day radiation safety program, fostering the continuous improvement of existing processes, procedures, and controls. This role will also be involved in emergency preparedness and response, acting to prevent and mitigate spills, contamination events, and exposure excursions. The position is based in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA and observes typical business hours, Monday through Friday. Some evening or weekend work may be required on a minimum basis.

Objectives

• Perform fundamental radiation safety-related tasks daily, including performing quantitative surveys for radioactive contamination and area radiation fields, collecting, replacing, and analyzing particulate and liquid samples, conducting radiation instrument constancy testing and calibration tracking, and completing / reviewing radiation safety-related documentation to maintain audit and inspection readiness.
• Provide comprehensive Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and provide field presence for various manufacturing and laboratory activities to ensure appropriate controls are being utilized and JHA recommendations have been appropriately implemented.
• Develop, implement, and improve radiation safety procedures and processes to ensure compliance with regulatory and POINT requirements – with accompanying recognition, development, and coordination of required radiation safety training.
• Proactively identify potential radiation safety hazards and initiate corrective actions and perform extent-of-condition evaluations to formalize systematic improvement of the site radiation safety program.
• Prepare radioactive material storage and inventory reports and maintain current account of radioactive material in storage as well as released from the site for proper disposal.
• Assist with maintaining waste disposal vendor relationships, and performing on-site waste processing, characterization, packaging, and recordkeeping in preparation for compliant waste shipments, coordinating with EHS to ensure all hazardous, radioactive, and/or decayed waste is suitable for release from the site.

• Contribute to or lead complex projects of large scope related to initiatives that expand radiological product research, development, and/or manufacturing.
• Evaluate contamination control practices, operational workflow, shielding design, and As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) controls for new projects or non-routine work.
• Respond to radiological incidents in such a way as to minimize risk to site personnel as well as the surrounding community and environment.
• Maintain on-site external dosimetry program, ensuring employee and public radiation doses are compliant and ALARA.
• Develop and perform radiation safety training for new hires and whenever program changes occur.
• Collaborate with Environmental, Safety, and Health personnel to maintain coverage of critical tasks and a well-aligned view of the safety program.
