JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Financial Aid Service Specialist is responsible for the front desk support of the Financial Aid Office and for counseling and advising students interested in applying for financial aid.ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for the complete and accurate financial aid counseling of students interested in applying for federal and institutional financial aid assistance.
- Share responsibilities with other Financial Aid Specialists located at a campus office including:
- Providing service to students seeking personal face-to-face financial aid advising and information.
- Answering phone calls when available and returning phone calls left on voice mail.
- Updating financial aid and scholarship information in various display case(s) and any other areas where information is posted.
- Assist students to complete MCC Foundation scholarship application on-line.
- Assist students to complete and submit Satisfactory Progress Appeal (SAP) form.
- Creating and maintaining student financial aid files in college imaging system and in Colleague database.
- Verification of database information with student documentation and processing corrected data.
- Preparing outgoing mail and processing incoming mail.
- Representing the College, at the request of the Director of Financial Aid, at state, community, or campus functions as they relate to student financial assistance.
- Providing preliminary information to assist students who may be eligible for veterans’ educational benefits by referring them to the Veterans Certifying Officials for assessment and processing.
- Ensure regular attendance to assist students with applying and maintaining financial aid.
- Attend work activities or programs as scheduled or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional student financial aid program requirements and regulations.
- Knowledge of MS Office Suite and other College-supported software.
- Skill in accounting procedures.
- Skill in customer relations and handling difficult interpersonal situations.
- Ability to work independently, structure time, meet deadlines, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to communicate effectively, in writing and orally, in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ability to read and interpret various official/legal documents in support of financial aid applications.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA guidelines.
- Ability to lift up to 20lbs and to bend, stoop, kneel, climb, push, reach, and walk to complete tasks.
- Ability to effectively work and interact with various cultures and ethnicities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associate’s degree.
- Three (3) years of full-time experience with post-secondary financial aid programs or customer service including handling difficult interpersonal situations.
- Equivalent combination of education and/or work experience considered.
- Working evening and weekend hours may be required.
- A valid driver’s license and insurability to drive College vehicles.
- Must pass background check.
