Position Summary:

To provide support to a caseload of 60 first-generation, low-income students and/or students with disabilities to ensure retention and graduation. Responsibilities include delivering one-on-one support for academic, social and financial challenges and goals, managing individualized success plans, serving as ombudsperson with other campus offices as needed, and supporting program activities.

Responsibilities include delivering one-on-one support for academic, social and financial challenges and goals, managing individualized success plans, serving as ombudsperson with other campus offices as needed, and supporting program activities.

25% Academic Advising

  • Advise in areas of course selection, choosing a major, course registration and degree planning.
  • Monitor and support students’ academic progress. Assist students on probation with development of an academic improvement plan.
  • Assist students with interpreting degree audits and plans, understanding degree requirements, as well as college policies such as account holds.
  • Understand, interpret and implement academic policies and procedures in all aspects of job performance. Assist students with disqualification appeals.

20% Financial Aid Counseling & Financial Guidance

  • Assist students in filing the FAFSA and applying for FLC and external scholarships/grants. Ensure students understand renewal requirements for aid.
  • Understand and interpret the general operations of the financial aid process and help students ensure applications are complete.
  • Understand and interpret the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements; assist students with the appeals process.
  • Monitor student bills and advise them on payment policies and options.
  • Advise in areas of financial literacy and resource options.

25% Academic Success Coach

  • Monitor progress of caseload with regular check-ins and proactive outreach.
  • Assist students in developing self-efficacy by identifying and overcoming obstacles impeding their success; help develop time management and organizational skills; motivate students to take ownership of their success.
  • Help students develop and implement learning strategies and study skills specific to the college culture and expectations.
  • Refer students to other resources with warm hand-offs and assistance in problem solving.

20% Personal Support

  • Assist students with problem solving and crisis intervention. Make appropriate referrals.
  • Serve as informal and neutral ombudsperson to assist students with issues and concerns.
  • Provide emotional support and realistic encouragement, prioritizing the student’s needs and goals.

5% Graduate School Guidance and Career Counseling

  • Assist students in the research of, and application to, graduate programs.
  • Assist students in the research and pursuit of career options in coordination with FLC’s Career Services Center.
  • Make referrals to appropriate campus and community resources.

5% Other Duties and Office Support

  • Assist in participant recruitment.
  • Data-entry into TRIO Blumen database for all student contacts, communications and outreach.
  • When required, perform front-desk duties (answering the phone, greeting visitors, making appointments for students, helping students with computer lab/copying/fax/lending library needs.)
  • Facilitate a culture of inclusion and professionalism that fosters student success.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other programs and committees on campus that serve program eligible students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position must:

  • Understand and utilize the following databases: Blumen (TRIO), Workday, MS Teams, MS Outlook, FLC Course Catalog, Slate, and Canvas.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
  • Engage in professional development that enhances direct student service delivery.
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.
  • Produce and remediate digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.

Work requires extensive knowledge of the FLC course catalog and course offerings, academic policies and procedures, financial aid/billing policies and procedures, and is predominantly intellectual and professional in character.
