- Full-time, 40 hours weekley
- Day shift
- No weekends, holidays, or on-call commitment
Job Overview
The Pharmacy Automation Specialist is a key member of the pharmacy team, playing a vital role in optimizing pharmacy operations. Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, this role is responsible for the implementation, maintenance, and monitoring of automated medication distribution systems. The specialist ensures compliance with procedures and the integrity of equipment while fostering strong working relationships with pharmacy leadership, staff, and other hospital departments.
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Active National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR the ExCPT Certification from the National Healthcareer Association AND
- Active registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician.
- General knowledge of medications and pharmacy automated systems is required.
- Must be minimally qualified as a Pharmacy Technician I with up to one year of technical pharmacy experience.
- Will receive training for compounding hazardous and/or non-hazardous sterile products as needed.
Job Responsibilities
- System Management
- Develop and maintain expertise in pharmacy systems such as automated dispensing cabinets, medication packaging systems, Swisslog Automation, IV automation, and related technologies.
- Perform daily maintenance tasks to optimize inventory, formulary, controlled substances tracking, and medication availability.
- Coordinate new implementations, upgrades, troubleshooting, and problem resolution for automated dispensing systems.
- Subject Matter Expertise
- Serve as a subject matter expert, resolving escalated issues and providing quality services to patients.
- Train, mentor, and orient new staff, and assist in intra- and inter-department education initiatives for automation systems.
- Quality and Safety Compliance
- Adhere to pharmacy policies, standards of work, and regulations governing drug distribution.
- Identify and resolve patient safety issues related to medication use and pharmacy automation.
- Customer and Vendor Relations
- Build positive relationships with customers, acting as a liaison between the pharmacy and vendors for software and hardware issues.
- Communicate automation-related information effectively to Pharmacy Leadership and staff.
- Sterile Product Preparation
- Assist with the preparation, labeling, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous compounded sterile products, including chemotherapy.
- Follow safety protocols and regulatory guidelines such as USP 797, USP 800, ASHP, NIOSH, and Board of Pharmacy laws.
