Basic Purpose:
Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the coordination, supervision, and direction of a correctional security program, maintaining security, control and custody of inmates, complying with policies, procedures, rules and regulations, and facilitating the successful operation of a state adult correctional facility.
Typical Functions:
· Conducts shift briefings, supervises correctional officers, and coordinates shift coverage.
· Provides a leadership role to subordinate correctional officers; serves as a positive role model and provides information to the chief of security.
· Completes performance reviews for subordinates and sets job expectations for officers; administers progressive discipline, monitors and approves officers' time and clears exceptions.
· Maintains a high degree of knowledge of duties required for assigned posts, offender programs, logs, policies and procedures; implements and performs those duties with minimal supervision.
· Provides security and supervision to inmates in a variety of situations and activities.
· Maintains security of an assigned area or post, responds to emergencies and adapts to any situation.
· Provides security and supervision over inmate work crews.
· Escorts inmates to work sites.
· Inventories and controls all equipment, weapons, tools, caustics and keys.
· Reviews safety and security for all areas.
· Patrols yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors, dormitories and work areas on an assigned shift.
· Observes activities and movements of inmates.
· Manages inmate conduct, work and discipline.
· Maintains order and discipline in programs and during meals and recreation periods.
· Inspects living areas, facilities, and work locations for unauthorized objects or materials; makes reports on incidents.
· Operates manually or electronically controlled security equipment, maintaining controlled movement of inmates, staff and the public.
· Conducts inmate counts.
· Performs searches of inmates and living quarters for contraband.
· Enforces institutional rules and regulations.
· Maintains security of various assigned areas involving long periods of sitting, standing and/or walking.
· Conducts sanitation and security inspections of all areas within assigned posts and takes appropriate steps to correct deficiencies.
· Prepares written documentation and reports concerning inmate behavior, status, and movement.
