About the role

Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking a Systems Engineering Manager to support the Peraton Space Exploration Networks Services and Evolution (SENSE) contract for our NASA customer based in Greenbelt, MD (GSFC). This position will allow for 100% telework, with travel to the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD and other NASA locations, as needed. A person who is within a commutable distance to the site and can work a hybrid schedule will be preferred.

 

As prime contractor on the NASA SENSE contract, Peraton is responsible for the development, operation, maintenance, sustainment and systems engineering of NASA’s worldwide satellite communication networks.  In this position, the successful candidate will conduct terrestrial ground-site development and sustainment for earth-moon communications and earth-sun Lagrange-L2 communications in support of NASA’s return-to-moon and space science missions. The successful candidate will be an integral part of a world class team that builds and ensures NASA’s space-ground communications are reliable and meet mission requirements.

 

This position will consist of systems engineering management and technical leadership duties to oversee execution on several SENSE task orders in support of ground station communications for NASA’s return-to-moon & space science missions. In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading a systems engineering team in both administrative and technical areas, so requires the candidate to contribute directly to specific engineering tasks while managing the team. The successful candidate also will collaborate with internal program stakeholders and project managers to identify opportunities to maximize customer satisfaction.

 

In this position, the successful candidate will:

  • Manage a team of direct reports and associated team activities
  • Ensure that designs meet functional and performance requirements
  • Ensure that department tasking is executed according to established schedules and within budget forecasts
  • Ensure department work products are developed in compliance with established local operating procedures and quality guidelines
  • Oversee and guide a systems engineering team in the development of systems engineering related documentation including:
    • Operations Concept documents
    • Requirements documents with traceability
    • Specifications
    • System and subsystem design documents
    • Interface Control Documents
    • Validation & Verification Plans
  • Oversee and guide a systems engineering team executing development project tasks including:
    • Preparation for and conducting milestone reviews
    • Planning and executing end-to-end systems integration
    • Performing analysis, design, and development of ground systems
    • Leading and performing trade studies
    • Interfacing with customers, external and internal partners
  • Evaluate current processes and based on identified needs, develop and implement process improvements
  • Establish and manage short- and long-term goals for the team
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure products and services effectively meet the requirements and expectations of the customer projects and contracts
  • Communicate and coordinate with contractors, NASA, internal and external customers
  • Compile and present periodic status reports to company, customers and stakeholders
  • Ensure staffing is sufficient to support department workload and provide oversight of hiring, training of staff
  • Ensure timecards of team personnel are completed in accordance with company policy
  • Conduct team member performance evaluations and coaching
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Occasionally travel to NASA sites for project-related activities

Qualifications

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or other related technical discipline, and 10+ years of directly related experience; or a Master's degree and 8+ years of related experience
  • At least 8+ years of experience as a systems engineer/architect on space-related development programs
  • Prior experience with analysis, design, and development of communications systems
  • Prior experience leading and performing trade studies
  • Knowledge of systems engineering processes and best practices
  • Prior experience coordinating and directing product development work
  • Prior experience with planning and scheduling project milestones
  • Working knowledge of the MS Office suite of tools, including MS Project
  • Security clearance: the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, which requires US citizenship.
