WSP USA is seeking a highly energetic, self-motivated, and goal-oriented Early Career Structural Engineer to support our Transportation Facilities Group in the New York, NY office. With the intimacy of a small group of staff, along with the support of a large firm, this is an excellent and unique opportunity for the right candidate to challenge themselves and to grow their career.

The Transportation Facilities Group (TFG) leads and design projects that supports local and regional growth initiatives through small and large transportation projects.  Our goal is to team with our agency clients and to develop solutions to the complex challenge of advancing transportation throughout the region.   TFG has over 60 engineers and architects throughout the Northeast Region, with major design hubs located in New York City, Boston, St Louis and San Francisco. 

The position offers varied projects in the transportation field within the NY Metro Region.  The Structural Engineer position will work under the supervision of a Senior Structural Engineer and includes designs in rail and bus stations, pre-k thru higher education projects, airports, transportation hubs, rail systems, as well a wide array of projects that lead and support the engineering divisions.   Clients include NYCT, MTA Bus, LIRR, MNR, PANY&NJ, Amtrak, NJ Transit, NYC SCA, contractors, and local utilities. The scale of work varies from small to mega-projects; the position offers the candidate a wide variety of structural engineering assignments and tremendous exposure to varied disciplines within the New York Office.
 

Typical projects types include:

  • Transportation segments include rail, bus, subway, airports and marine ports; Facility building types include administration buildings, tolling structures, parking structures, bus, rail and subway stations including associated maintenance facilities, ancillary buildings, ventilation buildings, central heating and refrigerant plant buildings, etc.
  • Pre-K through higher education school buildings
  • Resiliency related studies and design
  • Parks and recreation centers
     

Your Impact

  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Development of structural design, details and drawings, including calculations for new and renovation work
  • Developing drawings in REVIT (BIM), AutoCAD, and MicroStation
  • Utilizing Microsoft Excel and Mathcad Prime to develop of structural calculations
  • Knowledge in structural analysis software such as SAP, STAAD.Pro, RAM Steel, ETABS,and/or SAFE (or equivalent)
  • Field inspection of structural systems of buildings
     

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build.  
  • Familiarity with relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recent graduate or May 2024 Graduate in an accredited Civil Engineering, or related, Undergraduate or Graduate program.
  • The successful candidate will have 0-3 years of internship experience in Civil Engineering.
  • Experience using STAAD.Pro, SAP, ETABS, SAFE, RAM Structural System,
