Occ Summary

The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care supp ort partner with theRegistered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurs e (LPN) and performswork as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provides direct care topatients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coo rdination. Theindividual in this position is expected to perform basic c are andcomfort standards as well as have knowledge of the patient popula tionneeds in the assigned work area. In addition, the NA is expected toa ssist the RN in the care of acutely ill patients. This individual isexpe cted to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacy ofever y patient and family, and to respect cultural differences duringpatient care. They are expected to know andadhere to all basic policiesand proc edures and respond appropriately during emergency situations.They are ex pected to maintain the patient/family environment, performgeneral unit u pkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and ordersupplies as needed, w ith or without direct supervision. The NA isexpected to use accurate ver bal and written communication and todocument patient care appropriately in the electronic health record.Perform tasks within the scope of a Nurs ing Care Assistant I and II asdefined by the NC Board of Nursing. Perfor m a variety of clerical dutiesinvolved in preparing, maintaining, and pr ocessing patient, unit(s) andhospital data and records to include operat ing the organization'spatient care information systems. Individuals in t his role are typicallyscheduled for NCA II shifts at minimum 75% of the time.


Work Performed

Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures andprovide manual assistance as require d.Obtain and record patient data formedical records noting and informin gRN/LPN of information collected.Administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients including,but not limited to, feeding, bathing, h air care, changing clothing, nailcare, bed-making, assisting with ambula tion, enemas, skin care, andbowel and bladder elimination; provide such additional care as requiredto meet the personal needs and comfort of ass igned patients.Participate in teaching activities by reinforcing teachin g instructed byRN and/or providers asneeded.Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by helpingposition patients, changing non-st erile dressing and weighing patients.Take and record vital signs, record I&O, and apply ice bags. Note andreport any changes in patient's condit ion. Turn and position patients,set up and feed patients as necessary, p rovide patients with freshdrinking water.Perform fingersticks for blood glucose testing, with appropriatetraining, document and notify RN/LPN.As sist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients. Followst andard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.Col lect, deliver and conduct routine tests on patient specimens. Cleanassig ned area; stock and replenish supplies and equipment as required.Partici pate in own professional development by maintaining requiredskills valid ation and attending educational offerings. Support thedevelopment of oth er staff and formal learners.May also perform clean dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old.Perform a variety of clerical tasks involved in operating theorganization's patient care information system.
