Job Description

Job Summary

 AECOM is seeking an Engineering Manager – Maintenance Facility, for one of our offices in Sacramento, CA. This role will lead planning and engineering for Heavy and Light Maintenance Facilities and service yards. Develops facility plans aligned with rolling stock, systems, and long-term operations strategies.

 Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the engineering design, planning, and integration of Heavy and Light Maintenance Facilities and associated servicing yards.
  • Provide subject matter expertise (SME) in maintenance operations and facility design, ensuring alignment with overall program and operational goals.
  • Coordinate closely with rolling stock, systems, and civil engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of facilities with train operations and maintenance functions.
  • Develop and manage facility design criteria, technical standards, and O&M requirements in coordination with program stakeholders.
  • Review and approve design deliverables, specifications, and design changes to ensure compliance with applicable standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison for facility-related engineering issues with contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
  • Oversee the technical evaluation of proposals, designs, and construction documentation related to maintenance facilities.
  • Contribute to the development of long-term maintenance and operations strategies, including life-cycle cost analysis, staffing plans, and asset management considerations.
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant FRA, state, and local regulations as well as program safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to technical staff, fostering collaboration and professional development across multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements 

  • BA/BS + 10 years of relevant or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education, including 2 years of leadership

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline.
  • 20+ years of progressively responsible experience in rail maintenance facility design, engineering, and operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in high-speed rail, intercity passenger rail, or commuter rail maintenance environments.
  • Proven track record managing complex, multi-disciplinary engineering programs or large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of rail vehicle servicing practices, maintenance facility systems, and yard operations.
  • Strong familiarity with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations, California state safety and environmental standards, and industry best practices.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and coordination skills across diverse stakeholder groups
  • Experience working on large-scale, publicly funded infrastructure or rail programs (e.g., state or federal agencies).
  •  Experience in systems integration, commissioning, or O&M planning for high-speed or intercity rail.
  • Familiarity with sustainability and resiliency design principles for maintenance facilities.
  • Experience managing or coordinating with design-build or public-private partnership (P3) delivery models.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or similar.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
