The Digital Hub in Seattle focusses on developing a cloud architecture and building out the cloud platform for the next generation of connected car services. The Testing and Regulatory Affairs Division in Ann Arbor and the Advanced Vehicle Design in Carlsbad complete the competence center.
Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America Inc’s Farmington Hills, MI office is seeking a Powertrain Engineer with a passion for development, validation, and calibration of powertrain control functions to fulfill requirements across multiple electrified and conventional powertrain and vehicle variants.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Release Testing - Identify testing needs, define testing goals, and create testing plan which aligns with software release planning. Collect and analyze testing data, documenting testing results.
  • Calibration – Calibrate control functions to meet requirements. In case no written requirements available, clarify with internal customers or use own engineering judgement. Identify and report function deficiency, and follow up until it is completely resolved. Submit calibration changes and document the changes following the release process.
  • Test Trips - Participate in test trips for cold, hot, and high altitude development and validation.
  • Issue Resolution- Receive and own internal or customer reported issues. Determine and schedule testing environments (SiL, HiL, Dynamometer, Vehicle) to reproduce the issue. Identify the root cause, propose algorithm and/or calibration fixes, validate and document the resolution. Request and plan SW releases for all affected vehicle platforms.
  • Requirement specification - Identify and propose new features, create feature requirements. Request prototype software, validate and prove new features. Request and plan release roll-out to all relevant vehicle platforms. Per project needs, create requirements to document existing control functions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s in Mechanical, Electrical, or Automotive Engineering
  • 3-5 years Powertrain Engineering experience
  • In-depth knowledge of conventional and electrified powertrain controls.
  • Experience with Matlab /Simulink /Stateflow Experience with powertrain control units and components such as ICE, e-motor, inverter, and batteries
  • Competence in solving complex engineering problems.
  • Able to explain technical problems and solutions to management.
  • Self-motivated to increase technical know-how in assigned engineering areas.
  • Self-study and fast learning skills.
  • Able to propose and implement creative solutions.
  • Proficiency with powertrain calibration tools such as Vector CANape and ETAS INCA.
  • Ability and willingness to travel inside and outside USA.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experiences with HiL, SiL, dynamometer and/or vehicle testing.
  • Ability to work independently in vehicle and other testing environments.
  • Strong planning, teamwork, communication and organizational skills, as well as intercultural skills to drive assigned topics and coordinate stakeholders across several continents and different time zones with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to manage all activities around project and resource constraints.
  • Ability to author clear and concise technical reports for a wide, global audience.
