Summary:
The Full-time Audiovisual (AV) Technician is responsible for operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting audiovisual systems used for rehearsals, meetings, and events at the Houston Center for Dance, located in downtown Houston, TX. This role supports equipment including audio amplifiers, speakers, displays, video monitors, cameras, and conferencing systems.
The regular schedule for this position is: Tuesday–Saturday, 10:45 a.m.–6:45 p.m.
Occasionally, workdays and hours may shift temporarily to provide Box-office IT support (onsite/remote) on performance days (Saturday or Sunday).
This position performs quality control checks on AV systems, collaborates with company and academy staff, and provides day-to-day technical support. The position also assists with live streaming, system documentation, and coordination with vendors and network teams.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Set up, operate, and maintain audiovisual equipment for rehearsals, meetings, and events
Perform daily checks of Company and Academy studios
Perform weekly/monthly maintenance of Company and Academy studios
Maintain conference room AV systems and meeting technology
Monitor and maintain lobby displays and other digital displays throughout the building
Schedule equipment service and repairs with vendors and the IT department
Communicate updates and changes related to current technology systems
Develop and maintain training materials and technical documentation
Coordinate projects and support activities within IT
Participate in team meetings and provide status updates on technical issues
Test network connectivity and collaborate with the Network team when needed
Manage and resolve support tickets related to AV systems
Provide additional AV and audio support as needed
Qualifications:
Experience working with the following technologies is preferred:
Biamp: speakers, subwoofers, audio amplifiers, Tesira Forte Audio DSP
Sony: 4K displays
Crestron: touch panels, RMC4 room controller, DM Lite transmitter
Shure: SLX-D wireless microphone systems
Networking and infrastructure: Cat6 cabling, Cisco switches, Intel NUC PCs
Collaboration platforms: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zoom, and video casting technologies
Competencies:
Computer skills – Work with various computer technology including: Windows, MAC, iPads, Microsoft 365 suite (Word, Teams, SharePoint, Outlook,etc.)
Troubleshooting – AV technicians troubleshoot all equipment issues in a timely manner. Successful technicians strive to exceed expectations.
Physical fitness – Be able to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time. Be able to lift up to 40lbs. Ability to occasionally climb ladders as needed.
Tools- Be familiar with power tools and Network/cable toners/testers.
Customer service – ability to interface with customers and guests on-site to make sure their AV needs are met, and that equipment is functioning.
Organization skills – Essential for tracking and planning maintenance tasks and service requests around complex Company and Academy studio schedules.
Work environment:
Work is primarily performed in a well-lit, climate-controlled indoor office environment with adequate ventilation.
Moderate noise level (typical office equipment and light traffic).
Occasional work at special events such as the Nutcracker Market and other organizational events.
Regular schedule: Tuesday–Saturday, 10:45 a.m.–6:45 p.m.
Occasional evening, weekend, or Sunday work for performances and special events.
