Job Summary
The Financial Accountant is an entry-level position responsible for supporting the state's financial accounting functions. This role focuses on ensuring the accuracy of financial transactions, preparing financial reports, assisting with reconciliations, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. The Financial Accountant works under the guidance of more experienced accountants and supervisors and plays a key role in maintaining the financial records for state agencies.Primary Responsibilities
Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards. Process financial transactions, including journal entries, accounts payable/receivable, and general ledger entries. Reconcile financial accounts, ensuring that all discrepancies are identified and resolved. Assist in the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections. Help with year-end closing procedures and assist in the preparation of audit documentation. Review financial statements and records for accuracy and completeness. Maintain financial records and ensure that they are properly organized and stored for future reference. Ensure compliance with relevant accounting laws and regulations, including GAAP and GASB standards. Provide general administrative support to senior accounting staff, including preparing reports and organizing documentation for audits. Assist with the development and implementation of accounting procedures to improve operational efficiency.Knowledge and Skills
Basic knowledge of accounting principles and practices, including GAAP and government accounting standards. Familiarity with financial software and accounting systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, Oracle) and proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure accuracy in financial transactions and reporting. Good organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Basic understanding of budget preparation, cash flow management, and financial forecasting. Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues. Willingness to learn and develop professionally in the field of governmental accounting.Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field preferred.
