Education and Work Experience – Professional Requirements:
Must be skilled in pastoral leadership and developmental activities with the ability to facilitate both adult and youth group discussions and Bible studies. The Salvation Army is a part of the Wesleyan Holiness tradition. Appropriate candidates must agree to the Doctrinal and Positional Statements.
Scope of Position:
The Pastoral Care Chaplain is an integral part of the Senior Management Team for The Salvation Army's Portland Metro Social Services. The Chaplain provides support to the various Program Directors and staff in the area of spiritual assessment, counseling and development. The Pastoral Care Chaplain will be expected to participate within the framework of the program in a manner which will both facilitate the needs of participants and staff while at the same time promoting The Salvation Army's purposes as defined by its Mission Statement.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: A working knowledge of addiction recovery, along with skills and knowledge in residential treatment and related areas is desired in this position. It would be anticipated that through attendance at staff trainings, workshops, or conferences, as well as through self-study, such skills will be further addressed to enhance competency and performance in the fulfillment of those duties associated with this position. It should be noted that this position requires the Pastoral Care Chaplain to work with clients who may demonstrate unpredictable, impulsive, and sometimes aggressive behaviors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Establish and maintain regular office hours which will allow time for clients to seek spiritual support or guidance.
- Provide spiritual counsel, guidance and inspiration as may be needed to encourage the spiritual development of those participating in the programs.
- Develop a working relationship with staff and be available to provide spiritual leadership to staff and programs.
- Participate in case management, clinical or other staff meetings and as part of the Senior Management Team assist in making program decisions.
- Develop and maintain life skills classes in conjunction with program team.
- Interview participants for spiritual assessment.
- Provide spiritual encouragement to all participants, residents and staff.
- Facilitate weekly chapel and additional classes on spirituality.
