About the role

Position Overview

The Director, Building Codes & Standards spearheads efforts to ensure strategic support to AGA and its members for codes, standards, regulations, and legislation that support the use of natural gas for residential and commercial needs. This Director advocates and advances crucial building codes and standards that support the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible use of natural gas in end-use applications and markets.

 

Role and Responsibilities

  • Support AGA Building End Use Codes and Standards Committee activities to include preparing for, setting up, and developing agendas for both online and onsite meetings.
  • Develop and distribute materials for member review and action in support of the mission that natural gas use remains a viable commercial business and residence energy source.
  • Stay abreast of industry developments and implications to help identify short-term and long-term strategies that will meet membership building energy codes and standards priorities.
  • Identify and assess the impact of current and proposed appliance and/or building codes and standards that hinder or enhance the market acceptance of natural gas appliances and equipment.
  • Develop and maintain a priority list of codes & standards issues to AGA member companies.
  • Oversee the development of a consensus position among AGA members on high-priority codes & standards issues.
  • Lead advocacy at model code organizations and appropriate standards bodies for the adoption of AGA’s positions.
  • Participate in the development of appliance and/or building standards and seek adoption of code language to support the introduction of new natural gas appliances and products.
  • Collaborate with staff across the Association to provide technical support for legislation and regulation and other matters that advance AGA positions.
  • Interact and build consensus with colleagues, policymakers, industry partners, consumer groups, and other key stakeholders by contributing technical and economic information to issue discussions.
  • Identify and promote innovative uses of natural gas and new technologies that can open market opportunities.
  • Provide gas interchangeability technical support that will help ensure safe and reliable operations of residential and commercial gas equipment.
  • Oversee budget for the Building Codes and Standards area.

 

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • A thorough understanding of the process by which building and end-use codes and standards are formulated, adopted, and implemented.
  • Extensive technical understanding of residential and commercial gas equipment operations and installation requirements.
  • Ability to manage and/or conduct a quantitative assessment of the potential market and profitability impact on AGA members of current or proposed codes and standards.
  • Experience and proven performance in developing and gaining adoption of codes and standards provisions and regulatory and legislative requirements that enhance the use of natural gas in Commercial businesses and residences.
  • Undergraduate degree as a minimum in engineering, comparable technical degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent technical writing and oral presentation skills and success in persuading audiences.
