Corrosion Control Technician

 

This entry level specialist is responsible for the maintenance of an underground piping system and underground metallic facilities that are safe to the public, economically maintenance free, adequately protected from corrosion, properly installed and maintained for the life of the facility and in accordance with federal safety regulations. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the preservation of field-testing equipment such as ammeters, voltmeters, soil test meters, etc. providing for the detection of current flow/voltage, contact with other systems, etc.

Responsibilities

Must be able to perform the following functions with limited or no supervision:

Observe all aspects of corrosion work to ensure compliance with specifications, federal regulations, set standards, time, and cost constraints to achieve maximum productivity.

Ensure proper application of coating and paints to both under/above ground facilities (mains, services, bridges, etc.); oversee inspection of vendors and Coating Mills to ensure optimum quality control of application of coatings to specified piping, according to procurement specifications and rejecting unsatisfactory work when applicable.

Work closely with construction crews, vendors, coating mills and various PGW departmental employees to ensure the installation and replacement work of faulty cathodic protection materials; sometimes involves customer contact to gain access to premises.

Perform in-field investigations/surveys pertaining to both new and existing corrosion control systems to:

Conduct electrical testing to identify deficiencies and/or the overall quality of the jobs.

Determine reasons/issues of non-compliance for jobs reported as unsatisfactorily completed.

Provide assurance that specified element is repaired to avoid future maintenance issues.

Oversee bridge repair, IMP, and DIMP projects.

Maintain accurate up-to-date reports, logs, registers, maps, summaries, and job files for the maintenance of corrosion protected systems; maintain corrosion control testing material inventory.

Prepare and distribute reports to management outlining the effectiveness of corrosion protection programs, map showing status of control systems, compilation of cost evaluations and reports of in-field investigations.

Ensure the availability of corrosion test facilities/equipment necessary for responding to maintenance orders pertaining to damage created by foreign construction or re-pavement projects. Provide assurance that specified element is repaired to avoid future maintenance issues.

Participate in annual training classes offered for different levels of achievement based on specified qualifications (prior skill level, time in current position, etc.).

Perform other special projects and assignments as requested.

Qualifications

High school diploma or Equivalent.

0 + years relevant work experience, preferably in a utility environment.

Must have knowledge of electrical and electronic instruments such as voltmeters, ammeters, and familiarity with ohmmeters, coating fault detectors, electrical “short” locators, soil resistively instruments and recording voltmeters.

Must have verbal communications and interpersonal skills with the ability to build long-term constructive and cooperative working relationships with co-workers, vendors, management, and outside agencies.

Must have computer skills with knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
