The primary responsibility of the Senior Staff Accountant is to ensure accurate and timely accounting with complete and accurate documentation to support the company’s accounting and reporting needs.  The position will play a key role in the accounting close process while maintaining a sound control environment. 

What will I be doing?

  • The Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for monitoring status and completion of all tasks, ensuring timely completion in accordance with established deadlines, and reporting to accounting leadership and other internal and external parties. 
  • The Senior Staff Accountant will assist with accounting for equity transactions, stock compensation, debt and interest expense, cash, prepaids & accruals, intercompany and joint venture accounting. 
  • This position will also be responsible for preparing supporting documentation to support the Company’s consolidated and subsidiary financial statements and other regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Responsible for monthly close in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), as well as the company’s own accounting policies, to include recording of journal entries, analysis, inquiries, and review.
  • Performs variance analysis against prior year, forecasts and budgets as necessary.
  • Prepares balance sheet reconciliations for balance sheet accounts.
  • Responsible for having a good working knowledge of the related legal agreements and, with coaching from their supervisor, ensuring that transactions are accounted for in compliance with the terms of the applicable agreements, that risks associated with the contracts are assessed and minimized, and decisions are evaluated against the appropriate agreements.
  • Understands accounting internal control policies and procedures to ensure the internal control environment is maintained for all aspects accounting and provides supporting documentation to internal and external auditors regarding completion of control procedures.
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors and other third-party vendors to provide requested documentation supporting accounting transactions.
  • Mentors and assists in training the junior level associates as necessary.
  • Participate and/or assist the supervisor in special projects such as hotel sales, hotel purchases, debt refinancing, and any other aspects related to accounting for the company’s accounting function Ad-hoc.

What skills and qualifications must I possess?

  • Strong analytical and conceptual accounting skills, demonstrating the ability to effectively identify problems and generate solutions.
  • BA/BS/Bachelor's Degree
  • Self-starter with solid organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities or reprioritization of projects.
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-paced, evolving work environment.
  • Demonstrates an assertive, “can-do” attitude.
  • Superior attention to detail.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a team environment.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Accounting
  • Proficient computer experience in an Accounting General Ledger system, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Windows
  • Must be able to work extended hours as needed
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time.

What additional skills would be advantageous?

  • 2 or more years working in a corporate accounting environment.
  • 2 or more years of hospitality industry and/or real estate investment trust experience.
  • Experience working in an accounting environment using Oracle Fusion and Smartview.
  • Experience in joint venture accounting.
  • Experience in fixed asset accounting.
  • Certified Public Accountant.
