We are seeking an experienced Sr. Staff Computational Scientist with a robust scientific and computational background who has an interest in developing and implementing simulation and optimization techniques for superconducting qubits and superconducting electronics. This position will involve understanding and improving existing simulation and optimization tools as well as developing new ones. The ideal candidate has experience working on simulations used to design new experiments and understand test results.
This position requires work on site in Linthicum, MD, or Annapolis Junction, MD.
Your responsibilities:
- Develop and implement numerical simulation models and optimization techniques for the design of superconducting devices.
- Use simulation tools to analyze and understand test results on superconducting devices.
- Support the current and future development of simulation tools within function, cost, and schedule constraints.
- Ensure simulation and optimization tools scale and run efficiently on high-performance computing systems.
- Mentor junior staff.
What you need to be successful in the role:
- Motivation to conduct research in qubits and superconducting electronics.
- Tenacity when solving problems and drive to find optimal solutions.
- Ability to learn new techniques, as needed by the program requirements.
- Ability to present technical results to a wide range of audiences.
- Ability to collaborate in small groups (4-7 people) and to work independently.
Basic Qualifications:
- PhD in applied mathematics or a relevant engineering field plus 10 years of relevant experience
- Experience developing physics-based simulation and optimization techniques.
- Experience with computational methods (finite differences, finite volumes, finite elements) for solving ordinary and partial differential equations.
- Experience developing mathematical models to understand experimental results.
- Experience in collaborative scientific software development.
- Proficiency writing code in Python and C++.
- US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS/SCI) clearance with polygraph per business requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in applied mathematics or a relevant engineering field plus 10 years of relevant experience.
