About the Team / Role:
The Network Engineering team is looking for a highly motivated, strategic thinker to lead in the building and execution of our commercial products. This individual will be responsible for partnering with our Comcast Business partners to build out the proper network architecture for our IP and Transit product lines. Responsible for assisting with development of optical transport architecture standards and certification for National Backbone, CRAN (Metro/Regional) and Commercial networks. This would include installing and configuring optical transport equipment in a lab setting. This lab could be either a physical or a virtual environment. Works directly with Comcast SMEs, as well as external vendors when necessary, on both hardware and software certification. Could also be assigned impact assessment studies on network changes. Assessments may include both technology and financial impact. Provides clear and concise communications written and verbally to all parties involved on the progress of assigned projects. Works with limited supervision and direction while executing associated functions and responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Configures physical and virtual optical transport lab environment.
- Creates and executes test plans to certify optical hardware and software.
- Completes impact assessments for new technology or topology changes to the network
- Presents findings from hardware, software and impact studies to Comcast Optical SMEs and Senior Leadership.
- Partners with Comcast and vendor software developers to test and certify new versions of code and features.
- Acts as administrator for lab instances of NMSs.
- Authors process and standards documents.
- Communicates process and standards documents to end users to implement across all Comcast optical networks.
- Works with sustaining engineering team on designs and first office applications of new optical topologies and hardware.
- Good foundational knowledge of DWDM add / drop optical networks.
- Good foundational knowledge of OSP and ISP fiber characteristics and proper handling including link loss budgeting, installing, cleaning, use of an optical scope to examine connectors and all other proper workmanship.
- Trains and mentors Junior engineers.
- Provided program updates to key stakeholders on a consistent basis.
- Partner with our tooling teams, internal and externally, to help drive automation for certification execution.
Skills & Experience We’re Looking For (10+ years of experience):
- Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) design and operations principles
- Optical transport using Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexers (ROADM), Transponder, Muxponders and other relevant components
- Colorless and Fixed Grid transport architecture types for photonics and add /drop structure
- Ciena 6500 OME platform
