Program Description
The Bureau of Environmental Surveillance and Policy (BESP) in EH works to ground Health Department programs and policy in science and law to support a healthy and equitable natural, built, and occupational environment for all New Yorkers. We promote environmental health through legal and data-driven program support, using innovative methods to track environmental determinants of health with a focus on New Yorkers disproportionately impacted by environmental risk. We share data and research findings to encourage evidence-based decision-making, and partner with communities in community science and outreach to address stakeholder concerns and empower residents.
Position / Office Title Summary / Job Description

The Project Manager will work as part of a team in the Injury and Violence Prevention Program to oversee a two-year grant-funded project to use health-sourced data to better describe traffic injuries, particularly those related to micromobility. The project will use death certificates, medical examiner files, emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and other health-sourced data to better characterize traffic injuries. These analyses will help to more fully describe decedent characteristics and demonstrate the feasibility of and assess scalability for using hospital-sourced data to better understand patterns of micromobility injury.

Proposed Job Duties
- Lead this two-year grant-funded project, including managing day-to-day administrative tasks associated with grant implementation; developing and monitoring timelines, staff allocation, and budgeting; reviewing and approving final deliverables; and coordinating inter- and intra-unit activities and tasks, including assuring shared vision for analytic plans across surveillance activities
- Work with existing Injury and Violence Prevention Program staff to hire and supervise grant project staff and interns.
- Supervise two staff people -- tasked with mortality analyses and external partner coordination -- and coordinate with all project staff, including those conducting hospital data analyses of traffic-related injuries.
- Provide support, as needed, for surveillance and analysis functions, including contributing to and reviewing data analyses for quality assurance.
- Create and format publication-quality reports based on surveillance and program initiative data for internal and external use.
- Present data in written and oral form to key stakeholders.
- Perform all other responsibilities and projects as assigned by supervisors.

Preferred Skills:
- Ability to read, interpret and synthesize epidemiologic and quantitative data, and other scientific literature.
- Proficiency with SAS, R, or SQL.
- Strong competency in statistics, SAS programming, STATA or R and data manipulation technologies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including expertise in formatting and designing of reports, charts, graphs and tables.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills.
- Interest in and knowledge of traffic safety issues and policy.
- Experience managing staff and project research-related tasks and timelines.
- Experience with grant management functions, including hiring, budgeting, and reporting.
- Experience in mentoring and guiding less-experienced analysts and scientists in data analysis and manuscript writing.
- Doctoral degree or equivalent experience in epidemiology or related field preferred.
