Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle is hiring for a Sr. Data Engineer-Splunk SIEM for its Architecture Office in Richmond, Virginia.

The Sr. Data Engineer – Splunk SIEM is an advanced technical position responsible for designing, implementing, and managing data pipelines, integrations, and analytics within the DMV Architecture Office (AO). The DMV AO drives research, integration, and deployment of tools, technologies, and systems to enhance delivery of DMV services to customers, employees, and business partners. This role will serve as a key technical expert in Splunk SIEM and data engineering, transforming raw log and event data into actionable intelligence for security operations, data scientists, and business analysts.

Core Responsibilities:
•Splunk SIEM Development: Design, implement, and maintain Splunk data pipelines for ingestion, indexing, and alerting from multiple sources including system logs, application logs, and cloud-based telemetry.
•Security Data Engineering: Integrate security-relevant data sources into SIEM systems to support threat detection, monitoring, and compliance reporting.
•Data Pipeline Design & ETL: Construct efficient pipelines to extract, transform, and load (ETL) data from diverse sources into data lakes, warehouses, or Splunk indexes.
•Data Quality & Validation: Implement processes to ensure data accuracy, integrity, and normalization for security and business intelligence purposes.
•Data Modeling: Design scalable data models and schemas optimized for log, event, and metric storage in Splunk and other data repositories.
•Integration & Automation: Combine multiple data sources and automate ingestion, parsing, and enrichment workflows for improved data usability.
•Collaboration: Work closely with cybersecurity teams, data analysts, and business stakeholders to define requirements and deliver actionable insights.
•Technology Selection & Optimization: Evaluate and implement appropriate tools, programming languages (Python, SQL, SPL), and cloud or on-premises platforms to optimize data processing and security monitoring.
•Data Analysis & Splunk Dashboards: Generate reports and create actionable Splunk dashboards to provide operational visibility and actionable security intelligence.

Minimum Qualifications

•Broad, diversified background with experience in enterprise information technology, systems integration, and technical architecture.
•Experience with Splunk Enterprise, Splunk Cloud, or other SIEM platforms.
•Experience designing cloud or on-premises data architectures, including data lakes, warehouses, and reporting platforms.
•Strong understanding of log management, event correlation, security monitoring, and incident response.
•Expertise in relational, object-oriented, NoSQL, and time-series data models.
•Proficiency in data modeling, ETL pipeline design, and Splunk dashboard creation.
•Experience with DevOps or CI/CD tools.

Additional Considerations

•Knowledge of Commonwealth technical standards and DMV operations and systems.
•Familiarity with Virginia DMV injest and core SIEM.
