The Role: Principal Analyst, Vegetable Oils and Feedstocks

The Team: The Short-term Crops team is part of S&P Global Energy and produces industry-leading, forward-looking research and thought leadership across agricultural markets. Our analysis is relied upon by global producers, traders, processors, refiners, financial institutions, and policymakers to inform commercial, risk management, and strategic decisions. The team operates in a highly collaborative and fast-moving global environment, working closely with colleagues across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. We place a strong emphasis on analytical rigor, intellectual curiosity, and clear communication, with a focus on translating complex market fundamentals into actionable insight for senior decision-makers.

Responsibilities and Impact:

  • Own and manage Global supply and demand balances across the vegetable oils complex, with a primary focus on soybean, rapeseed, sunflower, and palm oils, and secondary coverage of lauric oils (palm kernel oil).
  • Conduct continuous fundamental market research, distilling signal from noise to deliver clear, defensible market intelligence through reports, white papers, and presentations
  • Produce high-quality market intelligence, forecasts, and written analysis, translating fundamentals into implications for physical trade flows and cash and futures prices
  • Directly support clients with analytical needs through briefings, ad-hoc analysis, webinars, roundtables, and conference presentations, both virtually and in person
  • Connect micro-level fundamentals with broader macro and policy themes, working closely with the global crops, wider agribusiness, biofuels, and macroeconomic teams
  • Continuously refine analytical frameworks, methodologies, and data usage, including quantitative or automated approaches where appropriate

Basic Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in economics, Finance, Agricultural Economics, or related quantitative field, or bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of relevant experience in agricultural commodity analysis
  • Minimum 3+ years of relevant experience in vegetable oils, soybean complex, or agricultural commodities research, trading, or analytics.
  • Strong understanding of physical vegetable oils markets, including production, processing, logistics, refining, and international trade, with a proven ability to build and interpret supply-demand balance sheets and translate fundamentals into trade flow and price implications.
  • Advanced proficiency in analytical tools such as Excel, statistical software (R, Python, STATA), and database management systems for market analysis
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to present complex market analysis to institutional clients and senior stakeholders
  • Experience in client-facing roles including presentations, briefings, and analytical support for trading firms, investment funds, or agricultural corporations
  • Solid understanding of global agricultural trade flows, policy impacts, and macroeconomic factors affecting commodity markets

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MBA, MS, or PhD) in Agricultural Economics, Economics, or Finance with specialization in commodity markets
  • Portuguese or Spanish language skills (spoken and/or written) will be a plus but not mandatory.
  • 5+ years of experience specifically in soybean complex markets (soybeans, soybean meal, soybean oil) or related oilseeds analysis
  • Experience with econometric modeling platforms such as Bloomberg, Refinitiv, or similar analytical systems used in commodity trading and research
  • Track record of published research or industry analysis in agricultural commodity markets with demonstrated thought leadership

Compensation/Benefits Information (US Applicants Only): S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $82,387-$102,100. Final base salary for this role will be based on the individual’s geographic location, as well as experience level, skill set, training, licenses, and certifications. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan.  This role is eligible to receive additional S&P Global benefits.
