About the role

Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA) is a key member of the Student Health Services clinical team, supporting licensed healthcare providers in delivering direct care to Barry’s student population. This role involves assisting with medical exams and procedures, administering immunizations, conducting point-of-care testing, documenting in electronic health records, and contributing to the overall efficiency of the clinic. The MA also plays a vital role in health promotion events and immunization compliance efforts that enhance student retention and persistence.​

Essential Functions

1.   Clinical & Patient Care:

  • Greet and prepare students for appointments in a welcoming, student-focused manner.

  • Obtain and record accurate vital signs: temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation.

  • Collect patient history, chief complaint, and health information for the provider review.

  • Assist with examinations, minor procedures, and treatments under provider direction.

  • Perform COVID-19, influenza, rapid-strep, urinalysis and other point-of-care testing as needed.

  • Administer vaccines and conduct blood draws (phlebotomy).

  • Provide aftercare instructions and ensure students understand follow-up steps.

2.   Documentation & Compliance:

  • Accurately enter clinical data into the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

  • Track and support immunization compliance for specific student groups (e.g., residential, international, athletic).

  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, and university standards.

  • Support infection control and safety protocols within the clinic.

3. Campus Engagement:

  • Support wellness and prevention events such as flu shot clinics, outreach tables, and campus health fairs.

  • Collaborate with campus partners (e.g., Counseling Services, Athletics, Housing & Residence Life) to promote student health initiatives.

4.    Clinic Operations:

  • Prepare, disinfect, and restock exam rooms between patient visits.

  • Monitor and maintain clinical supply inventory and ensure equipment functionality.

  • Assist with front desk operations (e.g., appointment scheduling, answering

  • phones) as needed.

  • Participate in departmental meetings and ongoing training opportunities.

Requirements

High School Diploma Required. Certification as a Medical Assistant preferred.

1-3 years previous experience.

3 years or more experience as a medical assistant with Phlebotomy and immunization experience may be substituted for Medical Assistant certification.
