The Lyme Disease Clinical Research Center in the Division of Rheumatology at Johns Hopkins is recruiting a Physician Assistant as we expand our practice and research efforts. This position includes outpatient responsibilities and will report directly to the Director of the Center. The supervising physicians are committed to the success of this program and will provide consultative support and training. The environment is highly supportive for a mid-level clinical provider, and it is expected that this individual will develop advanced clinical knowledge related to tick-borne diseases and conditions and their impact on the nervous system, autonomic nervous system, heart and musculoskeletal system. The mid-level will have decision-making authority and daily involvement in the direct patient management in the clinic. In addition, the Physician Assistant will engage in the clinical research of the Lyme Center.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Knowledge and interest in acute and chronic aspects of tick-borne illness, with a focus on Lyme disease and its diverse manifestations including neuropsychiatric, cardiac, musculoskeletal disorders.
- Ability to perform comprehensive history and physical examinations, establish accurate diagnoses, order pertinent laboratory tests, implement appropriate management plans and formulate concise relevant patient presentations for attending review.
- Outpatient management, including comprehensive or episodic health assessments of patients chronic and acute pain, fatigue and common neuropsychiatric conditions.
- Prescribing medication for the above according to standard treatment guidelines or in consultation with supervising physicians.
- Records and documents health assessment plans.
- Provides instruction and education to patients.
- Responds to patient telephone calls between visits.
- Develops and executes quality improvement projects.
- Interfaces with the pharmacy and home health care providers including ordering and monitoring infusions of IV antibiotics.
- Regularly attends scheduled continuing education programs to ensure current knowledge of procedures, protocols, and clinical care issues.
- Helping educate and enroll patients in research protocols and participating in study design and execution.
- Candidate must possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, demonstrate a high degree of self-motivation and have a basic understanding of computers and word processing.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
- Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
- Successfully completes necessary background investigations per University requirements.
- Completes and obtains necessary University, state and governmental credentials for clinical practice.
- Fulfills all Clinical Practice Association requirements for billing of insured patients.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, radiology, microbiology, pathology and clinical medicine for use in clinical assessment and intervention.
- Interest in helping to develop a state of the “model” clinical program at Johns Hopkins Medicine.
- Analytical ability necessary to evaluate health status of patient and to implement proper care plan.
- Interpersonal, communication skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients.
- Ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary environment with a high degree of self-motivation.

Starting Salary Range: $100,000 - $151,400 ($122,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
