POSITION SPECIFICS

We are searching for deputy office head for the Materials, Manufacturing and Sustainment Office at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University.  The mission of the Materials, Manufacturing and Sustainment Office (MMSO) is to deliver solutions to address our nation’s needs for rapid, cost-effective, weapon system development and sustainment; through the development of novel material solutions coupled with advanced processing, analytical, and manufacturing techniques.  The five divisions within the office conduct research in the fields of material science, materials and manufacturing engineering, electro-optics and electronics, systems engineering and sustainment. This position will be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty.

You will:

  • Work closely with the Office leadership team to build and maintain trusted relationships with key sponsors and stakeholders
  • Work closely with the Office Head and MMSO Chief Engineer to ensure the delivery of superior research deliverables to our sponsors
  • Support the MMSO Office Head in developing and executing strategic initiatives
  • Represent the Office in meetings and discussions with sponsors and guests.
  • Lead, manage and continuously improve the operations of the Office.  
  • Plan and manage office finances in collaboration with the MMSO Program Finance Manager
  • Oversee the Office's external web presence, overview briefing, and a library of supporting capability briefings
  • Plan and manage workspace and research facilities and equipment. 
  • Support the MMSO Office Head in daily interactions with colleagues in Enterprise Operations - Engineering Services, Business Services, Security, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Leadership Development, Culture and Student Programs
  • Lead, manage and continuously improve professional development, training and onboarding  

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • All aspects of leading individual and portfolios of research projects including developing technical concepts, writing winning proposals, staffing the project, conducting the research, managing budgets, and delivering
