Central State Hospital (CSH), a State of Virginia mental health hospital located near Petersburg, VA is recruiting for full-time Patrol Officers. The Patrol Officer will be under general supervision of the Shift Captain, provide for the oversight of public safety on the Petersburg Campus, and to provide efficient and effective means of reducing crimes and safety hazards through education, patrol, investigations, recovery of property and fire prevention.
Job Duties:
-Patrols within statutory jurisdiction; properties, buildings, and parking lots by foot, vehicle, or as assigned to establish a visible presence to deter criminal activity and to detect incidents compromising safety and security.
-Responds to calls for service in a timely manner.
-Assist local law enforcement with investigations of vehicle crashes on state owned property consistent with department policies.
-Demonstrates the skill to analyze and solve problems referring to the gathering of information, anticipation of problems, weighing of consequences, soundness of decision, and determining if enforcement action is required.
-Provides crime prevention services to facility through frequent patrols and safety presentations.
-Ensures that facilities and occupants are secure and safe through sound practices.
-Using a dispatched system, receive emergency and non-emergency calls for service, requesting police, public safety officer or tradesman without delay.
-Performs other duties as assigned.

Candidates must have the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner and be able to perform preventive operator’s maintenance. They must have experience and proficiency in the use of security equipment relevant to the job and the ability to perform effective searches of property. Candidates must possess interpersonal skills for dealing with sensitive, emotional, or potentially controversial interpersonal situations. Must have the ability to operate a personal computer and perform data entry.
Incumbent must have a valid Virginia Driver’s License and must be able to pass an extensive background investigation and meet the requirements to become registered by DCJS as a certified unarmed Security Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

-Shift midnight 10pm - 6am
-Valid Virginia Driver's license
-Knowledge of unarmed security and the ability to compose clear and concise written reports, statements, and other communications.
-The ability to become certified as a DSJS unarmed Security Officer.
-Ability to work any shift permanently or for a specified period of time.
