Job Description

Job Description:

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) invites applications for a senior, tenure-track faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level to advance cancer prevention and population sciences research within the HCC Cancer Control (CC) program. We seek an accomplished investigator with an established track record in cancer population science to contribute leadership, innovative research, and mentorship to our growing program.

The aims of the CC program are to 1) identify biological, behavioral, and health systems-related risk factors for cancer occurrence and its consequences, 2) develop, evaluate, and translate interventions that modify risk behaviors, reduce mortality, improve quality of life, and enhance survivorship, and 3) examine individual, community, and system-level barriers and facilitators that influence the delivery, uptake, and adherence of cancer prevention and control interventions. The HCC/CC program serves a diverse catchment area representing the entire state of South Carolina. The CC program has thematic emphases on tobacco control, cancer health disparities, early cancer detection, and survivorship research. Substantial growth in recent years has led to added strengths in health services and health outcomes research, cancer epidemiology, clinical decision science and data science. The reach of the program has increased through MUSC’s Regional Health Network, which provides opportunities to extend research by leveraging a network of both inpatient and outpatient healthcare facilities serving primarily rural populations across the state.

Areas of interest that align with the strategic growth of the HCC and CC program include cancer research related to precision population health, molecular or genetic epidemiology, implementation science, health disparities research, community-based research, early detection and screening, telehealth, health services and policy research, shared decision making, health promotion/health behavior, and symptom management.

Ideal candidates will have an established record of sustained external funding—preferably from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including the National Cancer Institute (NCI), or other federal agencies—and demonstrated success in securing competitive grants. Applicants should exhibit a strong commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary research and have a proven track record of mentoring junior investigators and contributing to academic leadership.

Current CC membership spans 3 colleges and 14 departments on the MUSC campus. Appropriate academic department assignments will be made in alignment with the candidate’s expertise and training.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD, MD, DO, DrPH, ScD or equivalent degree with training in medicine, epidemiology, public health, informatics and data science, nursing, psychology, anthropology, behavioral science, behavioral economics, health services, health economics, communication, decision sciences, sociology, or other related fields

  • Extensive cancer-relevant research experience

  • Extensive peer-reviewed publication experience, commensurate with career stage

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at MUSC
